- Medicare Basics
Medicare 101
Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 or older, as well as younger individuals with certain disabilities. In California, while the core "Parts" (A, B, C, and D) remain the same, there are unique state-specific programs, consumer protections, and changes effective in 2026.

Specifics for Californians in 2026
The "Birthday Rule" (Medigap/Supplement Plans)
California offers a unique protection known as the "Birthday Rule." If you already have a Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plan, you have a 60-day window starting on your birthday each year to switch to another Medigap plan of equal or lesser benefits without medical underwriting (no health questions). This allows you to shop for lower premiums annually.
Medi-Cal & Medicare Coordination
If you have both Medicare and Medi-Cal (dual eligible), California is expanding "Medi-Medi" plans (Dual Special Needs Plans or D-SNPs) to more counties in 2026. These plans are designed to coordinate your benefits so you don't have to manage two separate insurance systems.
- Asset Limit Changes: California has specific rules regarding asset limits for older adults applying for Medi-Cal.
- Dental Update: Starting July 1, 2026, there are changes to dental coverage for certain adults under Medi-Cal.
